Grundämnenas namnursprung

Var kommer varje grundämnes namn ifrån? Några hedrar planeter, mytologiska figurer eller forskare, andra det land eller den ort där grundämnet upptäcktes. Tryck på en cell eller filtrera på namnkälla och ursprungsspråk för att följa två sekel av namnkonventioner genom periodiska systemet.

Varje grundämnesnamn bär på en historia. De äldsta grundämnena var kända redan i antiken och deras namn går tillbaka till metallernas fysiska egenskaper eller platserna där de bröts. Från renässansen fram till 1800-talet vände sig upptäckare till grekiska och latinska rötter för att mynta vetenskapligt klingande namn. Moderna syntetiserade grundämnen hedrar oftast forskare, laboratorier eller platser för upptäckten. Tabellen nedan färgar varje grundämne efter sin namnkälla, med en liten ruta i övre högra hörnet av varje cell som markerar språket för ursprungsordet.

Av dessa 118 grundämnen är 29 uppkallade efter platser, 49 efter en egenskap hos grundämnet, 15 efter en person, 9 från mytologi, 9 efter en astronomisk kropp och 7 efter ett mineral. De vanligaste ursprungsspråken är Greek (40), Latin (31), English (23).

Vad menas med "Namnets källa"?
Namnets källa är den kategori ett grundämne är uppkallat efter, till exempel ett mineral, en astronomisk kropp, en mytologisk figur, en person, en plats eller en egenskap hos grundämnet. Helium kommer till exempel från grekiskans helios ("solen"), så dess namnkälla är astronomisk.
Varför kommer så många grundämnesnamn från grekiska och latin?
Under större delen av kemins historia var latin vetenskapens språk och grekiska naturfilosofins. Upptäckarna under 1700- och 1800-talen myntade rutinmässigt namn från klassiska rötter så att orden skulle kännas vetenskapliga och vara läsbara på flera europeiska språk.
Vad är en eponym?
En eponym är ett namn som härleds från en person. Curium hedrar Marie och Pierre Curie, einsteinium hedrar Albert Einstein, och seaborgium var det första grundämne som officiellt uppkallades efter en levande person (Glenn T. Seaborg).
Vem bestämmer det officiella namnet på nya grundämnen?
Internationella unionen för ren och tillämpad kemi (IUPAC) godkänner alla officiella grundämnesnamn och symboler. Det upptäckande teamet lämnar in ett förslag, IUPAC kör en offentlig granskning, och publicerar sedan det slutgiltiga namnet.
Är några grundämnen uppkallade efter ett land eller en delstat?
Ja, mer än ett dussin. Exempel är francium (Frankrike), germanium (Tyskland), americium (Amerika), polonium (Polen), nihonium (Nihon, ett japanskt namn för Japan) och tenness (den amerikanska delstaten Tennessee).
När får ett nytt syntetiserat grundämne sitt officiella namn?
När en gemensam IUPAC/IUPAP-arbetsgrupp har bekräftat upptäckten (vilket kan ta år) bjuds det upptäckande teamet in att föreslå ett namn. IUPAC kör sedan en fem månader lång offentlig granskning innan det officiella namnet publiceras.
