How many chemical elements are there?
There are 118 confirmed chemical elements on the modern periodic table. They run from hydrogen (atomic number 1) to oganesson (atomic number 118). Elements 1 to 94 occur naturally on Earth; elements 95 and beyond have so far only been produced in laboratories.
What is the difference between a metal, a nonmetal and a metalloid?
Metals are typically shiny, malleable conductors of heat and electricity. Nonmetals are poor conductors, often gases or brittle solids, and include oxygen, nitrogen and the halogens. Metalloids sit on the boundary and share properties of both, such as silicon, boron and arsenic.
Which element is the most common in the universe?
Hydrogen, by a wide margin. About 74 percent of the visible mass of the universe is hydrogen, with helium making up most of the remaining 24 percent. All other elements combined account for around 2 percent.
Which element was discovered most recently?
Tennessine (Ts, element 117) and oganesson (Og, element 118) were the most recently synthesised elements, with their discoveries confirmed in 2009 and 2002 respectively, and their names officially recognised by IUPAC in 2016.
Which element has the highest melting point?
Tungsten (W) has the highest melting point of any element at 3422 °C (6192 °F), which is why it is used for incandescent light-bulb filaments and as an electrode material in high-temperature applications.
Which element is the heaviest stable one?
Lead (Pb, element 82) is the heaviest element with at least one stable isotope. Every element heavier than lead is radioactive, though some have very long half-lives such as bismuth-209 and uranium-238.
